For Australians there are few Olympic Games moments more iconic than Nikki Webster singing Under the Southern Skies.
And we may have a chance to re-live the heartwarming TV moment 32 years.
Webster has responded to fan calls for a nostalgic repeat of her 2000 Sydney Olympics performance, when the Games return to Australia in 2032.
Her appearance made her a household name at just 13 years old and, thanks to fan pleas, she’s put her hat in the ring once again.
“I’d love to perform in Brisbane. Who wouldn’t?” Webster told Woman’s Day.Loading Tweet
“I mean, it’s the most rewarding performance of any person’s career, to represent your country on a global scale. It’s pretty awesome.”
Webster will be 45 when the Games return to Australia and her two children Skylah and Malachi will be older than she was when she performed in Sydney.
The singer told how the Olympics were always a “special time” for her and she was flattered by the demands for her to return on the world stage.
“To be thought of in that way is just incredible, it’s very humbling,” Webster shared.
“(But) I definitely won’t be wearing the pink dress.”
Media personality Deborah Knight began a petition last week to see Webster return to the stage for the Games, with the singer saying her “mind was blown” by the gesture.
Webster hopes her children will be able to be involved in any return of hers to the stage — saying seven-year-old Skylah would “absolutely” be involved.
“I remember watching Cathy Freeman light the cauldron and I was thinking, ‘where will I be in four years’ time?’ I certainly wasn’t thinking about where I’d be at 45,” Webster added.
“Technology has come a long way so maybe I could even levitate across the stage or something.”
