With their second-round selection in the 2021 NBA draft Thursday night, the defending champion Milwaukee Bucks traded down from No. 31 overall to No. 54 to select Alexander "Sandro" Mamukelashvili, forward, Seton Hall.© Mark Hoffman / Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Seton Hall forward Sandro Mamukelashvili (23) scores while being defended by Marquette forward Jamal Cain (23) during the first second of the game Saturday, February 29, 2020 at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, Wis. The Bucks sent their pick to Indiana for No. 54 and No. 60, along with two future second-round selections.
Milwaukee had originally acquired No. 31 from Houston in March as part of a deal that brought P.J. Tucker to the Bucks.
The Bucks are not only the defending NBA champions, their starting lineup is set and after Pat Connaughton they will be looking to add (or bring back) veteran help to round out the main rotation.
That leaves little room for Mamukelashvili in terms of immediate role, but he is an experienced yet developing player, having four college seasons under his belt. Overall, he joins a relatively crowded developmental group to compete for minutes, although with the futures of Bobby Portis and Tucker uncertain as of draft night the Bucks could be thin behind Brook Lopez and Giannis Antetokounmpo in the front court.

GM Jon Horst says
“He's really interesting. He's got a great motor. He's more athletic than people think vertically. I think you can see his lateral athleticism. He's really mobile. I think he's a potential multi-positional defender in the switch game. High, high level passer which usually translates to IQ, which is really important for bigs. ... He can shoot it. He shot it at a pretty high level. He's the conference player of the year in one of the best conferences in college basketball so I think he's ready to step in if needed. I see him as a little bit of a point forward, a multi-positional defender and a high IQ guy that has a chance to help us now and going forward.”
Synergy Sports profile, via NBA.com: “Playing a very unique role for a near 7-footer, Mamukelashvili did a little bit of everything for the Pirates helping space the floor, attacking mismatches one-on-one in the post and on the perimeter, serving as both a screener and ball handler in the pick and roll, and even pushing the ball himself in transition. Even serving as a facilitator at times, he may not have been overly efficient last season, but at his best, he stood out in a role unlike many in modern college basketball history.”
Kevin O’Connor, The Ringer: " Excellent playmaker who can deliver any pass in the book. He dribbles the ball with the fluidity and vision of an orchestrating guard. An NBA team could get creative utilizing his passing. … He has size, but doesn’t know how to use it when a smaller player is on him. He lacks a post game and the brute strength to back down opponents.”
Matt Babcock, Basketball News: “A unique prospect; he's a 6-foot-9 forward who is comfortable with the ball in his hands, running the pick-and-roll and stretching the floor. … His lack of athleticism may be a concern on the defensive end, but his versatility makes him an intriguing option.”
