Roma intend to sell Alessandro Florenzi against Jose Mourinho’s best intentions in order to finally sign Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka this summer, according to Tuttosport.
Florenzi will arrive in Rome after his post-Euro 2020 holiday on August 1 to resume training ahead of the new season. But his future at the Serie A side is uncertain beyond that, as CEO Tiago Pinto is welcoming offers.
Roma hope to make €10m (£8.5m) through selling Florenzi, with part of that then offered to Arsenal to sign Xhaka. Pinto also hopes to offload former Everton loanee Robin Olsen in a permanent deal amid interest from Rennes to further boost the Giallorossi’s budget.
But while Mourinho has long harboured desires of Roma signing Xhaka from Arsenal, Pinto could upset the Portuguese by selling Florenzi. The former Tottenham Hotspur boss wants the Italian to remain a part of his new squad in Rome.

Florenzi, however, believes his Giallorossi adventure has reached its end after spending last season on loan with Paris Saint-Germain. And Pinto hopes the 30-year-old’s farewell – plus that of Olsen – will finally unlock Xhaka’s path to the Stadio Olimpico.
Pinto has relentlessly refused to match Arsenal’s valuation of Xhaka during Roma’s pursuit this summer. Calciomercato note the Giallorossi chief has never stepped past €15m (£13m) but the Gunners want no less than €20m (£17m).
Xhaka wants Roma as much as Mourinho wants Arsenal midfielder
Xhaka appears to want to join Roma just as much as Mourinho wants to sign the Arsenal midfielder this summer. Il Romanista report the Swiss does not want to play for the Gunners in their Premier League season-opener against Brentford.
The 98-cap star has even already agreed to a three-year contract with the Stadio Olimpico natives, per Calciomercato. Xhaka will also slash his Arsenal salary by 50% to £50,000-per-week to join Roma, such is his desire to go.
And Gazzetta dello Sport note the Switzerland star will give up any final issues with the Gunners to leave. But the price has always remained a sticking point for Roma. Pinto is against paying Arsenal what they believe Xhaka is worth, five years after his £35m arrival.
